I’m Canadian and am familiar with tension between groups who perceive themselves as unique: the English, the French and the aboriginals. We have had our share of violence and blind hatred that, in October, 1970, brought about rule by marshal law.
Thankfully, that period was short-lived. We all learned from it. We still live with ethnic tension but have reached a level of peace never known before, from the time of the first French-European colonization.
I don’t think I could bring myself to visit a country that seems to be in a state of perpetual violence – the fear-factor is just too high.
I beg to differ!!!!!! what happened to your sense of patriotism Paul were u even born in SA? ever heard of the saying out of mind and out of sight? the only reason we dont see the harsh realities is because we are too absorbed in our own agendas and trust me in relation to the rest of the world we are not half bad at all!! 1stly there is no country that can claim to b crime free in the world!! So we had a few outbursts of violence, yes its bad but that gives u no right to paint the country in such a terrible light!! i am not saying SA is golden, no its full of crap and the beauty is that i accept it knowing that we are not half as bad as the other people out there. did u know that England has one of the highest amount of females murdered? the USA has the highest volume of gang related deaths, Mexico has the highest amount of assasinations and that Indonesia is crawling with drugs? have u ever stopped to think that the fact that all our dirty laundry is out there in the open may be because suck at it? the king pins are under wraps because they are just that good!! Paul love your country through the good and the equally bad and for you Tony im sure Canada is no walk in the park either!! just because people live in glass houses on the top of a secure hill does not mean there is no fire down the mountain! take a walk downtown Toronto then we can have this converstion again.
